REGIONAL COMPETITIONS
CONCRETE CORNHOLEEach school will provide a self-created cornhole board made from concrete. The cornhole boards will be used in a competitive double elimination tournament. The match-up will be chosen at random. Judging will be based on scoring in the tournament, aesthetics of the board, and technical criteria related to the concrete mixture and adherence to the specified dimensions.

Best Laid PlansLearn and practice your plan reading skills in this competition! The Best Laid Plans Competition challenges the teams’ ability to read and interpret various sets of engineering and construction plans. This ability shall be demonstrated during a timed test in which the team attempts to correctly answer as many questions as possible. Will you accept the challenge?

Concrete Table TennisConcrete Table Tennis is a fun competition that challenges teams to create a table tennis paddle made from concrete. Using the concrete paddle, students will compete in a double elimination tournament. The match-up will be chosen at random. Judging will be based on scoring in the tournament, aesthetics, technical criteria related to the concrete mixture proportions, and adherence to the specified paddle dimensions.

Muddy WatersEach team will build a rapid filtration system using a modified 2-liter soda bottle. The objective of the filtration system will be to filter 0.5 L of a water sample in the shortest time possible and with the least turbidity and residual coagulant components. Water for filtration will be collected from an urban pond (Lake Ella) in Tallahassee, FL. The pond was originally a natural sinkhole, but is now influenced by significant runoff.

Professional PaperASCE updated the Code of Ethics in October 2020. In this competition one person will be chosen to write a paper of no more than 2000 words comparing the latest version of the code of ethics with the previous version and describing what kind of impact the changes will have on the civil engineering profession.

Rush to CrushDemonstrate your abilities in creating a concrete mixture with accelerated hardening characteristics! The challenge of this competition is to maximize the concrete strength of a cylinder within the shortest time. Each team will have a maximum time of 40 minutes to measure, combine, mix, cast, and consolidate their two specimens.

Toil in the SoilThis competence consists of being able to determine the optimum moisture content and the maximum density of an unknown soil sample using a Standard Proctor. The sample will be compacted about 25 times in a 4 "cylindrical mold using a compaction stress that is generated by a 5.5-pound mass with a 12" drop. Each team can be composed of up to a maximum of 4 members, where they will only have one attempt to compact and reach the optimum humidity and maximum density.

Two TowersTeam should design, build and test two identical towers constructed from balsa wood. The required dimensions are 5” x 5” at the base, and 20” high. A steel rigid beam will rest atop the towers and judges will apply loads until fracture. The best strength-weight ratio will result in the winner, including the evaluation of the work log.

City SpiritCity Spirit is a Design-Build Construction Competition where teams should select three letters that represent them. A design team will develop the concept of the letters and the construction team will build it of approximate dimensions 5’ x 7’ x 4’. The real dynamic of a project will be developed with the submission of Request for Information (RFI), Submittals, development of plains and more...

Concrete Skee BallThe goal of the “Concrete Skee-Ball” competition is to challenge students to a fun, interesting, and competitive game that is entertaining while challenging students in the art of providing concrete mixes. Each team will design, build, decorate, and use a “Skee-Ball” made of concrete. Students shall create a 2 7/8” (2.87”) in diameter with a tolerance of +/- 1/8” (.15”) and weigh 0.63 lbs with a tolerance of +/- 0.05 lbs. In this competition, the mixture used, tolerance, weight, dimensions and aesthetics will be taken into consideration; in the end all the skee balls will be put to the test in a Skee Ball tournament and the winner will be the one who manages to accumulate the most points.
